One flat boardwalk, the Bicentennial Walkway, strings together four waterfront stops, the marina, the lagoon, the main street and the sailing club point, in a 20 to 25 minute stroll east, or a five minute drive if you would rather save your legs.
We should be honest about one thing first: we sit at Whisper Bay in Cannonvale, a touch west of central Airlie Beach, not in the middle of the strip. That distance is exactly what makes the walk worth doing. Instead of crossing a car park you follow the Coral Sea the whole way, and everything in this post is reachable on that single foreshore path.
Can you get into Airlie Beach on foot from Mirage?
Distance: the boardwalk is 2 to 3 minutes from the front door. Directions: step onto the foreshore and pick up the Bicentennial Walkway heading east. Hours: open all day, every day, and busiest from first light.
Yes, comfortably. The Bicentennial Walkway is a flat 4km coastal path built for the 1988 Bicentenary, running from Cannonvale Beach all the way to the Airlie Beach Lagoon. We sit right on it, so you are strolling the water’s edge within a couple of minutes of leaving reception. Heading east it hugs the Coral Sea past Coral Sea Marina and Shingley Beach before it reaches the lagoon and town, sealed in parts, raised timber in others, and shaded by she-oaks. Coral Sea Marina and Sorrento’s
Distance: about 8 to 10 minutes walk east from Mirage Whitsundays. Directions: follow the boardwalk east along Whisper Bay; the marina’s North village is the first precinct you reach. Hours: Sorrento’s kitchen 11.30am to 2pm and 5pm to 8pm daily; the bar runs from 11.30am till late.
Coral Sea Marina is the public harbour precinct at the heart of Airlie, 520 berths of yachts and reef boats with the boardwalk running straight through it. At the North village you will find Sorrento Restaurant & Bar, a waterfront Italian looking out over the Coral Sea and the islands. Regulars point to the house-made Prawn and Crab Spaghetti, and there are 2-for-1 pizzas daily from 2 to 4pm if you time the walk for a late lunch. Just beyond, Shingley Beach is a quiet little cove for a quick dip. An easy, pretty stop for couples midway along the path.
Is the Airlie Beach Lagoon free to swim?

Yes, free and patrolled. The Airlie Beach Lagoon is a large man-made swimming lagoon on the foreshore, watched by lifeguards through opening hours and ringed by grassed lawns, shaded picnic spots, showers and barbecues. Because it is stinger-free, it is the safest place to swim through the summer marine-stinger season, when the open water is off limits. The shallow edges make it a favourite with families and nervous little swimmers, and there is no charge to walk in. Airlie Beach main street
Distance: about 22 to 25 minutes walk, or a five minute drive. Directions: the main street, Shute Harbour Road, runs one block back from the lagoon. Hours: shops through the day; restaurants and bars into the evening.
The main street sits directly behind the lagoon, so the moment you finish the boardwalk you are in the thick of it. It is a compact strip, walkable end to end in about ten minutes, lined with cafes, dive shops, tour desks, gelato windows, restaurants and bars. This is where you book your reef day or island transfer, grab a morning coffee before the walk back, or settle in for dinner. Where is the best sunset near Mirage?
Distance: about 25 minutes walk, or a six minute drive. Directions: carry on past the lagoon to the eastern point of the foreshore at 11 Ocean Road. Hours: open seven days; Lions markets on the foreshore Saturdays 7am to 1pm.
Right at the far point of the foreshore, Whitsunday Sailing Club sits on the water with a bistro and bar that welcome the public. It faces west across Pioneer Bay, which locals will tell you is the best sunset seat in town, and the meals are honest and well priced. Time your walk for late afternoon and you can watch the light go from the deck before the stroll home. Mostly, yes. The Bicentennial Walkway is flat and either sealed or boarded for its length, with gentle gradients and no stairs on the main foreshore route. A few older timber sections are a little narrow, so allow some extra time with a pram or a chair.
What is the best time to walk the boardwalk from Mirage?
